Bromoform and dibromomethane measurements in the seacoast region of New Hampshire, 2002-2004
Atmospheric measurements of bromoform (CHBr3) and dibromomethane (CH2Br2) were conducted at two sites, Thompson Farm (TF) in Durham, New Hampshire (summer 2002-2004), and Appledore Island (AI), Maine (summer 2004). Elevated mixing ratios of CHBr3 were frequently observed at both sites, with maxima of 37.9 parts per trillion by volume (pptv) and 47.4 pptv for TF and AI, respectively. Average mixing ratios of CHBr3 and CH2Br2 at TF for all three summers ranged from 5.3-6.3 and 1.3-2.3 pptv, respectively. The average mixing ratios of both gases were higher at AI during 2004, consistent with AI's proximity to sources of these bromocarbons. Strong negative vertical gradients in the atmosphere corroborated local sources of these gases at the surface. At AI, CHBr3 and CH2Br2 mixing ratios increased with wind speed via sea-to-air transfer from supersaturated coastal waters. Large enhancements of CHBr3 and CH2Br2 were observed at both sites from 10 to 14 August 2004, coinciding with the passage of Tropical Storm Bonnie. During this period, fluxes of CHBr3 and CH2Br3 were 52.4 ± 21.0 and 9.1 ± 3.1 nmol m-2 h-1, respectively. The average fluxes of CHBr3 and CH2Br2 during nonevent periods were 18.9 ± 12.3 and 2.6 ± 1.9 nmol m-2 h-1, respectively. Additionally, CHBr3 and CH2Br2 were used as marine tracers in case studies to (1) evaluate the impact of tropical storms on emissions and distributions of marine-derived gases in the coastal region and (2) characterize the transport of air masses during pollution episodes in the northeastern United States. Mutations of the ret protooncogene in German multiple endocrine neoplasia families: Relation between genotype and phenotype.
It has been suggested that not only the position but also the nature of the mutations of the ret protooncogene strongly correlate with the clinical manifestation of the multiple endocrine neoplasm type 2 (MEN 2) syndrome. In particular, individuals with a Cys634-Arg substitution should have a greater risk of developing parathyroid disease. We, therefore, analyzed 94 unrelated families from Germany with inherited medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) for mutation of the ret protooncogene. In all but 1 of 59 families with MEN 2A, germline mutations in the extracellular domain of the ret protein were found. Some 81% of the MEN 2A mutations affected codon 634. Phenotype-genotype correlations suggested that the prevalence of pheochromocytoma and hyperparathyroidism is significantly higher in families with codon 634 mutations, but there was no correlation with the nature of the mutation. In all but 1 of 27 familial MTC (FMTC) families, mutations were detected in 1 of 4 cysteines in the extracellular domain of the ret protooncogene. Half of the FMTC mutations affected codon 634. Mutations outside of codon 634 occurred more often in FMTC families than in MEN 2A families. In all but 1 of 8 MEN 2B patients, de novo mutations in codon 918 were found. These data confirm the preferential localization of MEN 2-associated mutations and the correlation between disease phenotype and the position of the ret mutation, but there was no correlation between the occurrence of hyperparathyroidism or pheochromocytoma and the nature of the mutation
Interpretation of Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Spectra in Doped LaCuO
The nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectrum of strontium doped
LaCuO surprisingly resembles the NQR spectrum of LaCuO doped
with excess oxygen, both spectra being dominated by a main peak and one
principal satellite peak at similar frequencies. Using first-principles cluster
calculations this is investigated here by calculating the electric field
gradient (EFG) at the central copper site of the cluster after replacing a
lanthanum atom in the cluster with a strontium atom or adding an interstitial
oxygen to the cluster. In each case the EFG was increased by approximately 10 %
leading unexpectedly to the explanation that the NQR spectra are only
accidentally similar and the origins are quite different. Additionally the
widths of the peaks in the NQR spectra are explained by the different EFG of
copper centres remote from the impurity. A model, based on holes moving rapidly
across the planar oxygen atoms, is proposed to explain the observed increase in
frequency of both the main and satellite peaks in the NQR spectrum as the
doping concentration is increased
The Evolution of Central Volcanoes in Ultraslow Rift Systems : Constraints From D. Joao de Castro Seamount, Azores
The Dom Joao de Castro seamount in the Hirondelle Basin (Azores) is a central volcano on the ultraslow diverging Terceira Rift axis. The combination of structural and geochemical data provides insights into the evolution of central volcanoes in oceanic rift systems above the Azores melting anomaly. The orientation of fault scarps and volcanic structures at D. Joao de Castro and the adjacent Castro fissure zone indicate that the regional SW-NE extending stress field dominates the morphology of the NW Hirondelle Basin. The regional tectonic stress field controls the crustal melt pathways and leads to dike emplacement along fissure zones and the prevalent eruption of mafic lavas. The occurrence of mafic to felsic lavas at D. Joao de Castro gives evidence for both a deep and a shallow crustal melt reservoir generating a subordinate local stress field at the seamount. New Sr-Nd-Pb isotope data along with incompatible trace element ratios indicate that D. Joao de Castro and the Castro Ridges originated from similarly heterogeneous mantle source but did not form simultaneously. Our new model implies that central volcanoes along the Terceira Rift form by the growth of volcanic ridges and transitioned into circular edifices after magmatic systems generate local changes in the regional lithospheric stress field. The geometry of D. Joao de Castro and other magmatic systems along the Terceira Rift combined with the alkaline nature of the erupted lavas, and the large lithosphere thickness indicates that young oceanic rifts are more similar to continental rifts rather than mid-ocean ridges.Peer reviewe
Discrete model for laser driven etching and microstructuring of metallic surfaces
We present a unidimensional discrete solid-on-solid model evolving in time
using a kinetic Monte Carlo method to simulate micro-structuring of kerfs on
metallic surfaces by means of laser-induced jet-chemical etching. The precise
control of the passivation layer achieved by this technique is responsible for
the high resolution of the structures. However, within a certain range of
experimental parameters, the microstructuring of kerfs on stainless steel
surfaces with a solution of shows periodic ripples,
which are considered to originate from an intrinsic dynamics. The model mimics
a few of the various physical and chemical processes involved and within
certain parameter ranges reproduces some morphological aspects of the
structures, in particular ripple regimes. We analyze the range of values of
laser beam power for the appearance of ripples in both experimental and
simulated kerfs. The discrete model is an extension of one that has been used
previously in the context of ion sputtering and is related to a noisy version
of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation used extensively in the field of pattern

Parallel Unsmoothed Aggregation Algebraic Multigrid Algorithms on GPUs
We design and implement a parallel algebraic multigrid method for isotropic
graph Laplacian problems on multicore Graphical Processing Units (GPUs). The
proposed AMG method is based on the aggregation framework. The setup phase of
the algorithm uses a parallel maximal independent set algorithm in forming
aggregates and the resulting coarse level hierarchy is then used in a K-cycle
iteration solve phase with a -Jacobi smoother. Numerical tests of a
parallel implementation of the method for graphics processors are presented to

Rifting of the oceanic Azores Plateau with episodic volcanic activity
Extension of the Azores Plateau along the Terceira Rift exposes a lava sequence on the steep northern flank of the Hirondelle Basin. Unlike typical tholeiitic basalts of oceanic plateaus, the 1.2 km vertical submarine stratigraphic profile reveals two successive compositionally distinct basanitic to alkali basaltic eruptive units. The lower unit is volumetrically more extensive with similar to 1060 m of the crustal profile forming between similar to 2.02 and similar to 1.66 Ma, followed by a second unit erupting the uppermost similar to 30 m of lavas in similar to 100 kyrs. The age of similar to 1.56 Ma of the youngest in-situ sample at the top of the profile implies that the 35 km-wide Hirondelle Basin opened after this time along normal faults. This rifting phase was followed by alkaline volcanism at D. JoAo de Castro seamount in the basin center indicating episodic volcanic activity along the Terceira Rift. The mantle source compositions of the two lava units change towards less radiogenic Nd, Hf, and Pb isotope ratios. A change to less SiO2-undersaturated magmas may indicate increasing degrees of partial melting beneath D. JoAo de Castro seamount, possibly caused by lithospheric thinning within the past 1.5 million years. Our results suggest that rifting of oceanic lithosphere alternates between magmatically and tectonically dominated phases.Peer reviewe
Estimate of spot size of a flat top beam in detection of gravitational waves in space
Motivated by the necessity of a high-quality stray light control in the detection of the gravitational waves in space, the spot size of a flat top beam generated by the clipping of the Gaussian beam(GB) is studied. By adopting the mode expansion method (MEM) approach to simulating the beam, a slight variant of the definition of the mean square deviation (MSD) spot size for the MEM beam is proposed and this enables us to quickly estimate the spot size for arbitrary propagation distance. Given that the degree of clipping is dependent on the power ratio within the surface of an optical element, the power ratio within the MSD spot range is used as a measure of spot size. The definition is then validated in the cases of simple astigmatic Gaussian beam and nearly-Gaussian beam profiles. As a representative example, the MSD spot size for a top-hat beam in a science interferometer in the detection of gravitational waves in space is then simulated. As in traditional MSD spot size analysis, the spot size is divergent when diffraction is taken into account. A careful error analysis is carried out on the divergence and in the present context, it is argued that this error will have little effect on our estimation. Using the results of our study allows an optimal design of optical systems with top-hat or other types of non-Gaussian beams. Furthermore, it allows testing the interferometry of space-based gravitational wave detectors for beam clipping in optical simulations. The present work will serve as a useful guide in the future system design of the optical bench and the sizes of the optical components
